How to record your screen and take a video capture on Mac

Recording the screen of a Mac is very easy, it can be done without the need to install a third-party application for it. Apple has already built this feature into its system and screen recording works great on the latest versions of macOS such as Catalina, Mojave, or Big Sur. All the screenshots you have taken will be available as video files that you can edit, share or publish as you wish.

How to record your Mac screen?

It’s very simple, you just need to launch the screenshot toolbar. The latter is activated using a keyboard shortcut by pressing the keys on your keyboard Command + Shift + 5.

  • To record the whole screen, click on the button that shows a screen with a solid outline and a circle in the corner.
  • To save a section of your screen, click the button that shows a screen with a dotted outline and a circle in the corner. Part of your screen will be highlighted and you will see dotted lines that serve to delimit the area you are going to capture. You can resize or move this window.
  • When you are ready, click ”  Save “. If you are recording your entire screen, you can click anywhere on the screen to start recording.
  • To stop recording, you can either press the stop button in the right corner of the menu bar at the top of the screen, or press Command + Control + Esc . You can also press Command + Shift + 5 to bring up the screenshot bar at the bottom of the screen and press the stop button in the center of that bar.

Click on ” Options ” to set your preferences. You can activate your microphone, for example, set a timer and choose where to save your recording. You’ll also find other nifty settings like the ability to toggle thumbnails on and off, whether or not to show the mouse cursor in screen recordings and shots, a timer delay to start the recording, etc.

If you want to share, delete or edit the screen recording, you can do it easily. Click the right mouse button (or control + click) on the thumbnail that appears in the lower right corner of the screen immediately after the end of the recording, and there are sharing options.

Another tip that is useful to know; If you press the Command + Shift + 5 combo box to display the Screen Recording and Snapshot toolbar but decide that you don’t need it, you can close this toolbar. tools by pressing the (X) button in the toolbar itself or by pressing the Esc key .

This feature is available on recent versions of MacOS (catalina, Mojave, Big Sur) , for earlier versions, you will be able to use the Apple Quick Time software to take your screenshots.
